Many people have heard the theory that our sense of smell is directly connected to our memories and that often it will subconsciously trigger memories from our childhood. Not only am I well aware of this I'm also a walking example of it. I know for a fact that I use the soap I do in the shower, because it reminds me of my childhood. However, recently I remembered a smell I had long since forgotten. Every morning I get up and shower, sometimes shave, and go to work often with a dress shirt. My office is typically kept on the very border of bearable and unbearably cold so as a result I don't really sweat. Driving home (assuming it is not obscenely hot like it has been recently) I might sweat just a little. When I get home I will be changing and I notice a smell. It's a combination of soap, deodorant, after shave, laundry, and "office". As soon as I smell it I'm taken back to my childhood. I remember my dad coming home from work (a little earlier than I do now). I remember being at home with my mom and running to the door to greet him. I remember sitting there chatting with him or following him upstairs as he changed. And I remember that this is how he smelled.
